Mexico's Most Sustainable Hotel

Updated: Mar 22

Tucked away amidst the serene beauty of Bacalar's lagoon, Azul Nomeolvides stands as a shining example of sustainable living in harmony with nature. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by its unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and innovative approach to eco-friendly architecture.

Bioclimatic Architecture

Embracing bioclimatic principles, the property engages seamlessly with its natural habitat. Perched on a steep slope, Azul Nomeolvides is fragmented into small modules, blending effortlessly with the terrain while offering panoramic views of the shimmering lake below. Thanks to its stepped layout, the hotel manages to limit its construction footprint to just 5% of the land, preserving a whopping 95% of green and permeable areas for the enjoyment of both guests and wildlife alike.

Cool Comfort

Step inside the cabanas, and you'll find yourself enveloped in comfort and coolness, even on the hottest of days. Their high roofs and louvered openings create a natural chimney effect, ensuring that hot air rises and cooler temperatures prevail within. With a 60-degree roof inclination, the design significantly reduces heat gain by radiation, while still allowing for plenty of natural light and breathtaking views of the lake below.

Conservation Commitment

But their commitment to conservation doesn't stop there. The team at Azul Nomeolvides has made it their mission to protect and preserve the natural environment at every turn. From preserving existing trees to regenerating endemic vegetation, they are dedicated to undoing the damage caused by prior development. They prioritise regional resources in all procurement practices, ensuring a symbiotic relationship with their surroundings.

Is it Mexico's Most Sustainable Hotel?

Living completely off the grid, the hotel proudly generates 100% of its electricity through solar panels and recycles all wastewater using a one-of-a-kind water treatment plant powered by live bacteria. Their waste management practices are equally eco-friendly, with organic waste composted and inorganic waste carefully recycled. Plus, they use only biodegradable and environmentally friendly products throughout the hotel.

Untouched Beauty

And when it comes to the stunning lagoon front, they've taken great care to keep it as untouched as possible. With hidden terraces nestled among the trees and minimal man-made artefacts, they've created a tranquil oasis that blends seamlessly with the natural landscape. Kayak along the nearby shores, and you shall witness firsthand the contrasting waterfronts. So yes, it may certainly be one of Mexico's most sustainable hotels.

Local Pride

But perhaps their greatest pride lies in their team, all hailing from Bacalar, whose passion and dedication ensure that your guest experience is nothing short of extraordinary. At Azul Nomeolvides, sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it's a way of life. So come, immerse yourself in the melodious songs of native birds and experience Bacalar's beauty in a way that's as unforgettable as it is sustainable. Dear Fatima, if you're reading this article, we miss you, we hope you're well.

How To Get There?

I flew from Mexico City to Cancún. After a few days in Cancún, I took an Ado bus from Cancún to Valladolid, and again from Valladolid to Bacalar. I had to cross the expressway with my luggage in tow to get a taxi, it's a ten minute drive to the hotel. For more travel inspirations around the Riviera Maya check out the following links:
